Roberta Fanguy

Roberta Cunningham Fanguy passed away into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, joining her beloved husband of 70 years, Julius Fanguy.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Bayou Blue, LA beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with burial in the church cemetery.

Roberta was born on November 1, 1933 to Loveless and Mabel LeCompte Cunningham, the third of six children. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings, Leroy (Eta), Horace (Adeline), Lloyd, Jason, Anna Parks (Gerald); and infant great grandson, David Michael Fanguy.

Roberta is survived by her three sons, Guy (Glenda), Kevin (former wife Candy, deceased wife Caroline and current fiancé Donna LeBouef), and Brent (Debbie); grandchildren, Rebecca, Jesse (Heather), Jacob, Joshua (Ryan), Sarah Oliver (John) and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Katherine Saltee, Isabella and Brianna Boquet, Hailey, Alana, Luke and Gabriel; and great-great-grandson Asher.

Roberta's childhood shaped her into a strong, determined, and capable woman. With her family, she spent time living on the bayou in a Palmetto hut while her father worked as a trapper. After having to quit school in eighth grade to help support her family due to her father's health, she got a job at the Bijou theater where she met her husband Julius. They married in May 1955 and spent the next 70 years cultivating a home on his family property in Bayou Blue. Roberta was not only a dedicated homemaker and mother to her three sons, but she was also skilled in labor and craftsmanship. She helped build a brick rental home and remodeled several other properties, including their own home and the two camps they built over 50 years ago.

She worked tirelessly to keep up eight acres of land, cutting grass, weed-eating, raking leaves, chopping branches, and even meticulously sweeping pine needles into tidy circles of mulch around trees. Her last ride on her diesel tractor was just five months before she passed. She showed a true appreciation for God's creation and was a lover of animals. Fishing with her husband was her favorite thing to do, and she was very good at it.

Family was her greatest joy. She liked to play Nintendo with her grandchildren, and more recently bonded with her seven great-grandchildren over many rounds of her favorite marble game. Despite her formal education being cut short, Roberta was a voracious reader and a formidable Scrabble player who could outmatch any opponent. Her commitment to learning served as an inspiration to her family. Known for her quick wit and signature sarcasm, it's no surprise that she remained spirited until the very end.

A faithful wife, loving mother, and devoted "Maw Maw," Roberta will be dearly missed but leaves behind a legacy of hard work and steadfast love.
