Obituary

Philip James Cunningham, 78, passed on Monday, June 1, 2026 at 9:15pm surrounded by his wife and loving family. Philip was a native and resident of Houma, LA.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church from 9:00am until service time. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin on Saturday at the church for 11:00am with burial to follow services and Mass in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery #2.

Philip is survived by his family; his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Jane Sheffield; children, Nicole Foret (Dennis), Sally Fortenberry (Charles); siblings, Emery Cunningham, Elward Cunningham (Betty), Brenda Theriot, Jane Breaux (Jimmy), Eric Cunningham (Mary Lee), David Cunningham; sisters-in-law, Susan Nusynowitz, Gwen LeBlanc Sheffield; loving grandchildren, Cole Patterson (Stacey), Shea Patterson, Breanne Hester (Dustun), Chase Fortenberry (Allison), Katelynn Chaisson (Darien), Emily Fortenberry; nine loving great grandchildren. Philip is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Philip is preceded in passing by his parents, Andrew and Lillian Hutchinson Cunningham; mother-in-law, Sydney Sheffield; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou, Mary Jo; brothers-in-law, Freddie Theriot, Bill Sheffield, Martin Nusynowitz; and nephew, Mark Cunningham.

Philip enjoyed fishing and duck hunting. He also enjoyed the time he spent in daily fellowship with his brothers while sharing Coca Cola, biscuits and stories around the table.

Philip was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served during the Vietnam War.
