Mirtala "Martha" Moore, a woman of strong Christian faith, passed peacefully on January 9, 2026, surrounded by love. Born on July 21, 1943, Mirtala lived a life defined by devotion to God, her family, unwavering strength, and a heart that loved deeply and generously.
Mirtala was truly the heart and soul of her family. She was the matriarch - the one everyone came to for guidance, wisdom, comfort, sweet hugs, and unconditional love. She adored her family wholeheartedly, and her presence brought a sense of peace, belonging, and warmth to all who knew her. She was an amazing mother, an amazing daughter, an amazing friend, an amazing grandmother, and an amazing great-grandmother. She was the life of every gathering, full of joy, laughter, and light. She never met a stranger and had an extraordinary gift of making people feel at home.
At a young age, Mirtala came from Guatemala in search of a better life for her children. She carried with her courage, determination, and an unbreakable work ethic. Arriving in the United States with a language barrier, she faced countless challenges, yet she never let them stop her. She worked hard, sacrificed endlessly, and built a life rooted in love, resilience, and opportunity for her family. And while she worked hard, she also knew how to enjoy life - she laughed fully, loved deeply, and celebrated every moment.
Throughout her life, Mirtala held many jobs and wore many hats. She worked as a machinist, a galley hand offshore on a rig, a cook, a house cleaner, and in factories - doing whatever was necessary to provide for her family. Her life was filled with stories of perseverance, learning, and survival, especially from her early years in Chicago. Those stories, shared with warmth and humor, reflected her strength, humility, and deep appreciation for how far she had come.
Mama had a deep passion for cooking and was a phenomenal cook. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, culture, and love. She took great pride in preparing Guatemalan, Cajun, and Mexican dishes, sharing her heritage and her heart through every meal. Her talent and love for cooking led her to own two restaurants during her lifetime, something she was very proud of.
She loved music deeply - singing, worshiping, and praising were central to her life. Mama also wrote music and had a song that was copyrighted and recorded, a reflection of her creativity and faith. Music was one of the many ways she expressed love and connection.
Mirtala was an avid planter, and her home was always filled with flowers and plants. She had a remarkable gift for bringing things to life - nurturing what others thought was gone and making it flourish. In her quieter moments, she enjoyed playing bingo, finding joy in simple pleasures and shared laughter.
Throughout her life, Mirtala faced multiple illnesses, yet she never allowed them to define her. She met every challenge with strength, grace, and an unwavering positive spirit. There was nothing too hard for her - she always looked for the good, even during the most difficult moments of her life. Even at the harshest points in her life, she continued to thank God for what she had been gifted with.
Her final hospital stays were a true blessing. She was surrounded by incredible doctors and nurses who were more than medical professionals - they showed her genuine love, compassion, and care, ensuring she was comforted, respected, and deeply cared for until the very end.
