Mary Jude “MJ” Guidry Guyan Avant, age 68, of Houma, Louisiana, passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2026.
Mary Jude was born on February 2, 1958, in Houma, Louisiana. She dedicated her life to caring for others, both professionally and personally. Whether she was helping a patient, a friend, or a family member, she was always willing to lend a hand and put others' needs before her own.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel Guyan; her husband, John Avant; her parents, Elmore and Doris Guidry; and her brother, Elmore Guidry, Jr.
She is survived by her son, Joey Guyan; daughter-in-law, Tracy; granddaughter, Sara Reeves (Ben); greatgrandson, Carson Eschete, who lovingly knew her as "Mimi"; stepchildren, Kassie Avant, John Avant Jr., and Joan Avant; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members; and her beloved pups, Beau and Bella.
Mary Jude worked as a nurse at Heritage Manor for more than 35 years. She was known for her kindness, dedication, and unwavering willingness to help anyone in need. Nursing was more than a profession to her —it was a reflection of who she was. She cared deeply for those around her and never hesitated to step in when someone needed support.
Those who knew MJ will remember her generous heart, her strength, and her ability to always be there when it mattered most. As a mother, she somehow managed to survive all the shenanigans that teenage boys can get into while raising Joey—including one particularly memorable occasion when he and his friends took her car for a joyride before they were even old enough to drive, a story that would become a favorite source of laughter at family gatherings for years to come.
She enjoyed making jewelry, spending time with family and friends, and spoiling her beloved Jack Russell "Terriorists," Beau and Bella. To her great-grandson Carson, she was simply "Mimi," a title she cherished deeply. Her kindness and compassion touched countless lives and created lasting memories for all who knew her.
Family and friends are invited to attend services on Friday, July 3, 2026 at Chauvin Funeral Home in Magnolia Chapel beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Nurses Honor Guard service will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow her service at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.
The family sincerely appreciates the love, prayers, and support shown during this difficult time. A special thank you is extended to Connie Blanchard and Angela Guillory for their friendship, compassion, and support.
Mary Jude will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Chauvin Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mary Jude Avant.
