Magnal Thomas Martin Sr., a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and children on July 19, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on November 29, 1935, in Houma, Louisiana, Magnal enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life that spanned nearly a century. Residing in Bourg, Louisiana, he was a pillar of strength and support for his family and his community. Magnal is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mildred Gilfour Martin, children, Magnal Martin, Jr., Jerry Martin, Barbara Ockerman (Blaine), Sandra Couillard (Ty), Preston Martin (Stephanie); 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and brother, Walter Paul Martin (Lana)

Magnal is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence "Lulu" and Lula Mae Toups Martin; daughter, Debra Portier and son-in-law Mark Portier; and sister, Betty Dupre; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Rose Adams Gilfour and Junius Gilfour. Magnal will be lovingly remembered for his 70-year marriage to Mildred, the love of his life. They were married on Sunday, August 26, 1956 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. Their story began in a vibrant dance hall, where they found joy in each other's company and shared a passion for dancing that became a cornerstone of their relationship. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. An industrious man, Magnal dedicated 38 years of his life to Freeport McMoRan, where he held the esteemed position of Plant Operator A/Forman. His unwavering work ethic, high integrity, and pride in his accomplishments were the driving forces behind his success in the sulfur mining industry. Magnal was not only a committed professional but also a great provider who instilled the values of hard work in his family. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy characterized by his love for the outdoors, often spending his days fishing, hunting, barbecuing and hosting seafood boils with family and friends. In his spare time, he loved his tools, tinkering in his shed, and keeping his yard pristine. Each of these activities brought him happiness and a sense of peace, reminding those around him of the joys of life. Magnal will be honored with a visitation at St. Joseph Catholic Church (Chauvin), on Saturday, July 25, 2026, beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. As we gather to celebrate the remarkable life of Magnal Thomas Martin Sr., we remember a man whose spirit will forever resonate within the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind his cherished wife Mildred, and his memory will live on in the stories and experiences shared by his family and friends.
