Leward "Sou" Henry, 96, of Chauvin, LA, was a devoted family man, proud Korean War veteran, and lifelong pillar of Terrebonne Parish, passed away on October 17, 2026. He was a quiet but strong leader who embodied the resilience, steadfast character, and quiet fortitude of a truly great man.
When his country called during the Korean War, he answered with unwavering duty and honor, serving in the United States Army. The discipline he learned in the military shaped every aspect of his life. Following his honorable service, he returned home to Chauvin and dedicated decades of his life to helping others. He worked in the oil field for Freeport Sulphur as a crane operator. When he retired he worked for the school board as a master plumber. From its inception in 1986, he served with distinction on the board of commissioners for the Terrebonne Parish Levee District for over 40 years, where his visionary leadership helped safeguard the bayou region for generations to come. He was also a very active member in the Ward Seven Citizens Club, the VFW and American Legion.
Beyond his civic dedication, Sou was a dependable man known far and wide for his legendary cooking. Whether standing over a pot of authentic jambalaya or simmering a large batch of traditional white beans, he showed his love through every meal he prepared. He shared his skills by supporting his local organizations like Lagniappe on the Bayou, Ward Seven and VFW Fairs.
He had a love for music and an unwavering support for his beloved LSU Tigers. Known for a quick smile, he was always especially proud to earn the affectionate title of "Nashville Now Snoozer" given to him by his granddaughter. His unforgettable stories, wisdom, and gentle guidance left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Sou is reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Shirley Portier Henry, his son Patrick Henry, his parents, Theodore and Aliska Henry and his brother Roland Henry Sr.
To cherish Sou's memory are his children; Robert "Bob" Henry (Phylis), Sally Henry Rogers (Joey) and Mary Henry Hurst. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren; Emily Henry Stoufflet, Corey Henry, Kristi Rogers Ledet, Amy Henry Portier, Jason Rogers, and Jill Hurst Gonsalves, along with his 12 great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters, Winnie Breaux and Gayle Henry. He also leaves behind a large circle of lifelong friends throughout Terrebonne Parish.
