Obituary

James Autry Jagneaux, affectionately known as "Jag," passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, leaving a heartwarming legacy of love and talent. Born on July 4, 1938, in Mallette Prairie, Louisiana, James embodied the spirit of a hardworking contractor, providing for his family while creating a profound impact on all who crossed his path. A devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, James's family was his pride and joy.

 He is survived by his beloved daughters Sonia (LeeRoy) Lirette, Jackie Babin, Jollette Jagneaux; 9 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren 5 great great grandchildren; siblings, Nora Pitre, Georgine Joubert, Bob Jagneaux, Sandra (Robert) Chatelain; loving companion, Shirley Duplantis who carries his spirit forward.

 James was not only known for his exceptional skills as a carpenter but also for his passion for music, a talent he honed as a self-taught guitarist and singer. His soulful renditions of Cajun and country music brightened gatherings, with a special affinity for the timeless tunes of Hank Williams Sr. and the legendary actor Gene Autry. Those who were fortunate enough to hear him sing will remember the power and warmth of his voice.

 James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Geraldine "Gerri" Leonard Jagneaux; parents, Curley Jagneaux and Loyce Fontenot Jagneaux; brothers-in-law, L.J. Leonard, Peter LaBorde, and James Joubert; sisters-in-law, Mary Leonard and Patricia "Pat" Jagneaux. 

James had a zest for life that was infectious. He fondly recalled his younger years working alongside his family in the fields. He also spent many years riding his horses. His outgoing nature and friendly demeanor meant that he never met a stranger, and he brought joy and laughter wherever he went. 

James is now joyfully reunited with his beloved wife of 54 years, Geraldine "Gerri" Jagneaux, as he embarks on a new journey with his Lord and Savior. His passing leaves a beautiful void, but his spirit will live on through the memories and love he shared with family and friends. 

Funeral services will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church on Thursday, May 28, 2026. Friends and family are invited to a public viewing starting at 10:00 AM, followed by a heartfelt Mass at 12:00 PM. James will be laid to rest in the church cemetery, as we honor his remarkable life and the indelible mark he left on our hearts.As we reflect on the life of this extraordinary man, let us celebrate the moments we shared with him and the legacy he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed, yet forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
