James Istre, Sr, a native of New Orleans, La. and resident of Houma, LA., passed away on Monday, August 31, 2026. He lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a love for family, friends, and the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
James is survived by his children, Jaque Istre (Heather), James Istre, Jr. (Kathie) and Jenetta Sykes (Theodore); his grandchildren, Alaina, Kaden, Kodie, Jaxson, Kyson, Kaylie, Zach, Kaitlyn, Diamond, Melik and Corrina; his great-grandchildren, Kyrie, Sanaya, Ari'ella and Sy'mere; his siblings, Dianne LeBlanc and Penny Istre Mead (Bill).
James was preceded in passing by his wife, Janie Lynn Schattenberg Istre; his mother, Orina Istre; and his siblings, Robert Lovergne and Pamela Faulkner.
James proudly served his country in both the United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to duty and patriotism. Following his years of military service, he remained deeply engaged in the world around him, never missing an opportunity to discuss current events and politics with those around him.
James found great happiness fishing and spending time on the water. He was a devoted fan of the New Orleans Saints and enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. Whether cheering on his favorite team or sharing stories with family and friends, James had a way of bringing people together.
A faithful member of St. Louis Catholic Church, James regularly attended Mass and found strength and comfort in his faith throughout his life.
James will be remembered for his strong opinions, lively conversations, sense of humor, and the love he shared with those who knew him.
