Velia Lucille Dupre’ Matherne Pavlu, 93, a resident of Houma, LA died at 12:51 a.m., Monday, August 8, 2011. Velia was born May 5, 1918 in Pointe-aux-Chênes, Louisiana.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Chauvin Funeral Home located at 5899 Highway 311 in Houma. Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 12, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, 6109 Highway 311 in Houma, with the service to follow at 10:00 a.m. and the burial at Terrebonne Memorial Park.
Velia is survived by four daughters and five sons: Larry E. Matherne and wife Judy Bowen of Houma; Glynn N. Matherne of Houma; Linda Ledbetter & husband Donald of Georgetown, TX; Deanna Webb and husband Tommy of Millport, AL; Lance R. Matherne and wife Teresa Harris of Gulf Shores, AL; Nona Matherne and companion Craig Hebert of Houma; Vaughn E. Matherne of Foley AL; Mark S. Matherne and wife Susan Elliott of Richardson, TX, and Debra Fabre and husband Chris of Houma, and one brother Levis J. Dupre’ of Owensboro, KY.
She is also survived by 28 grandchildren:
Gina Matherne Fanguy, Stephen S. Matherne, Troy Matherne, Clint Matherne, Tina Matherne, Corey Matherne, Glynn Matherne, Jr., Chad Matherne, Dana Williams, Deryl Hawkins, Duane Webb, William Webb, Danny Webb, Chris Matherne, Kenny Mott, Ernie Mott, Melanie Mott, Robbie Mott, Amber Selph, Matthew Selph, April Hebert, Scott Matherne, Emily Matherne, Logan Matherne, Abbey Boudreaux, Daniel Matherne, Kathy Matherne Gregory, Michele Chauvin and Sean Chauvin.
She also has 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Eustace Matherne and her second husband Julius Pavlu, her parents Aubin and Nelia Dupre`, sisters Movelia, Lelia and Lillian. Grandchildren: Candice Matherne, Madalyn Mott, Sherry Selph and great grandchild: Darian Theriot.
She graduated from MacDonell Methodist School in 1938, was a member of First United Methodist Church of Houma, the United Methodist Women and a member of the “Was Young Once” group and AARP. She loved sewing, crocheting, gardening, cooking and being with family & friends.
