Antoinette “Tee Tante” Marie Theriot, 94, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:10 PM. She was a native of Theriot and resident of Houma for the greater part of her life.
Visitation will be held on Saturday July 2, 2011 from 9:00 AM until service time at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Mass will be held at 12:00 PM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church with burial following at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Euclid, Sr. and Delcia Champagne Theriot ; five brothers, Clama, Clarence, Mitchel, Anthony and Euclid, Jr.; one sister, Mrs. Kirby (Anne) Bergeron.
She was a parishioner of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church.
After graduated from Terrebonne High School in 1934, she attended S.L.I. (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.
For six years Antoinette taught in the Terrebonne Parish public schools, after which she entered a religious community, the Marianites of Holy Cross, during which time she continued to teach.
Antoinette taught at several parochial schools in New Orleans, Plaquemines, Lake Charles, Opelousas, Louisiana and Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
She was appointed one of the first elementary school supervisors in the Diocese of Lafayette.
After twenty four years in the religious order, she returned to teach in the Terrebonne Parish Public School system for another twelve years, including the teaching of adult education classes for several years.
She retired from the public school system in 1978 and spent her last four years of teaching at Saint Francis de Sales Elementary in Houma, a total of 45 years in the field of education.
Antoinette was a member of the local, district, state and federal Retired Teachers’ Association and a charter member of the Association for Gifted and Talented students in Louisiana.
For 70 years, she was a member of Court Cardinal Gibbons No. 177 Catholic Daughters’ of America.
She enjoyed working in her yard, sewing, and volunteering to help others and her church. She was a very religious person.
